What would be better? To give birth to a young African American boy knowing the challenges he will face or to not comprehend the dilemmas? As I ponder this thought I considered a thought the great Frederick Douglas stated in The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass:

“I would at times feel that learning to read had been a curse rather than a blessing. It had given me a view of my wretched condition, without the remedy. It opened my eyes to the horrible pit, but offered no ladder upon which to get out”

In a perfect world this would not even matter, however this world, this time is far from perfect. The truth is the conditions have never been perfect, and perfection for some is the dehumanizing and the extinction of others. If you are not prepared to make un-selfish choices and prepare your children by any means necessary, the odds are your children will have a life of tragedy. The quest starts with cultivating the intellectual ego. There is the colloquial definition of child development that takes on a different meaning as it pertains to the development of African American boys. Too often different gets confused with better or less than and a fear of being anti-America, anti-white, but in fact it is a necessity to be pro African American. When in fact until a child learns to respect themselves and develop intellectual determination, there is no respect at all. Because of the historical context of how America came to be the manifestations of implicit and explicit inhumanity have not been taught. It is more problematic for those individuals who are in denial of history. The intellectual ego is developed by reading the history of self and the world. It is cultivated by family pictures and stories. It is enhanced by the stories of individuals who look like them who have made a contribution to humanity. But, it is also beneficial for the young African American boy to be made aware of those who did not make the right choices and the consequences. Television, entertainment and social media are an affront to a young man with an intellectual ego. The intellectual ego is a sponge with no filter in the early stages of childhood development. When you understand the learning process and see what children are exposed to we see the logical conclusion. There are only three tasks. First task, African American only boys school that start at pre-school up to high school. The curriculum would not be any different than 1st through 12th grade; however there will be emphasis on African American history, contributions and failures to humanity. Second task, turn off every TV in the house and/or remove them. Television can only be introduced once a child has a since of self, discipline, purpose, family and world history. The role family plays in a young boy’s development are just as significant as the external community. When Dr. Kenneth and Mamie Clark conducted “the doll tests”, an African Americans role in entertainment was limited to none. However, African American children internalize a self-hate. The study pointed out that segregation; prejudice and discrimination were the main causes. Later, studies of this kind would also include poverty as an influencer along with segregation as the issue. Although, we do not exist in a segregated society legally, spiritually and intellectually we do. Isolation is the not the problem, it is the resources, availability of learning tools and having experience professionals develop and mentor boys to men. Although, young girls have succeeded where the boys have not, this context involves young girls as well. The developments from birth to 8 years old are influence by two things: genetics/DNA and environment. Third task, with the new technologies and social media, smart phones and laptops must be managed and or not allowed. It is so disappointing to have this great technology called the smart phone and it records drama, violence and tragedy. In some cases it is the tool and motivator to step outside of what is humane. This is a moral imperative if these three continue unchecked and not addressed. When you think of prenatal care it is isolated to the care and well-being of the mother during pregnancy. The prenatal care should extend into the community and environment of mother’s (parents) to be. This preventative care starts before a baby is born. We are bringing children into this world into a space that right now does not want them to succeed. This thought process is often a confusion of race and humanity. There is a subliminal context that is still primitive which is concerned with food, water and shelter. The challenge and fear of survival is the human condition. The contradiction is that we are civilized; we are not civilized, human beings have become more sophisticated with primitive behavior. We can build, destroy, give life and take life quicker and faster but this behavior is no different than it was 500 to 1000 years ago. There is an inherent monetary liability and asset in the color of your skin. The devaluation of birth begins before you are born… Wake up melanin is your asset, not your liability.
